Court Rejects $100 Million Uber Class Action Settlement

A federal court recently rejected a proposed $100 million Uber class action settlement between the company and its current and former drivers because the settlement did not provide adequate relief to the Uber drivers.

The drivers in the lawsuit claim that due to the amount of control that Uber exerts over them, they are Uber employees, not merely independent contractors. Of course, classifying Uber drivers as employees would cost Uber a lot more money because it would have to pay payroll taxes and ensure minimum wages. Uber also would have to reimburse its drivers for expenses and vehicle maintenance if they were classified as employees.

Many Uber drivers were angered by the proposed Uber class action settlement because it represented only a fraction of the potential value of the case.  Several hundred drivers filed objections with the California federal court presiding over the case. The court rejected the settlement as inadequate because it is less than ten percent of the case’s potential verdict value. The case will proceed towards trial unless Uber and the drivers can reach a revised settlement that the court approves.

Uber is currently valued at $62.5 billion.
